Day out at the Entertainment Companies (Seoul)

Our flight (on Korean Airlines) to Incheon Airport arrived early in the morning, so we had plenty of time to stalk explore the entertainment companies after we left our luggage at Seoul Mansion Guesthouse. Being Kpop fans how could we miss this opportunity to add this into our itinerary?! Of course, it was all in the hope of bumping into a Korean idol or two and get an autograph and/or photo with them. Thanks to iceprinxess (who directed us to a blog with pretty clear instructions on how to get there), MX and I took a the subway down to the Apgujeongrodeo Station Exit 3.

Note: Please do not mistake that as Apgujeong Station as I did the last time I was in Seoul.
©Travel Bytez

It was an adventure as we meandered along the path and explored the area. MX led me to Chrome Hearts, a boutique (which high security) which sells many stylish accessories that celebrities usually wear. The sales assistants were all dressed in black (giving them that smart polished look) and attended to us politely (even if we ended up not buying anything). From Chrome Hearts, we... Read more >>

Tuk tuk Experience to Central World: the movies and ice-cream

Since the hotel we were staying at, which was Novotel Platinum Pratunam Hotel, provided complimentary tuk tuk service to the nearby shopping malls (e.g. Siam Paragon, Central World, Big C etc…) and nearby BTS stations, we just had to try it!

Tuk tuk Experience to Central World: To the movies and ice-cream

Anyways, after breakfast we decided to head down to the lobby to see if the tuk tuk was available (it is on the hour by the hour on a first-come-first-serve basis). We ended up having the whole tuk tuk to ourselves (4 persons). The tuk tuk service was a nice touch to our stay, and it was an interesting experience being on the streets on a vehicle similar to a car and... Read more >>

Travel Thoughts: Day Out at the floating market and zoo, Chocolate Ville and dinner (Bangkok)

On the second day of our time in Bangkok, DramaQueen arranged with a (tour) driver to bring us to the floating market and the zoo. As a bonus, we were brought to Chocolate Ville and recommended this really nice restaurant for dinner.

We didn’t really plan our trip that well, and so we spent almost half the day traveling – the floating market and zoo were practically at the opposite ends of Bangkok! It took about 2 hours each to travel to each places! We left from our hotel at about 9am and arrived at the floating market around 1030am. Unlike the first time I went with PrincessyLee, we were brought to another corner of the floating market, but the gimmick of taking your photo and trying to sell it to you for 200 baht in the form of a customized photo-frame souvenir was the same.

There was a boat rental where it cost 2,000 baht for 1hr and 2,500 baht for 1hr 30min, regardless of the number of people on the boat. We had 4 people so it worked out to be 500 baht per person, since we went for the 1 hr ride. It would definitely be more worth it if we had more people (the boat can take up to 8-10 people I think). Unlike the first time I was there, the boat was motorized so the speed was definitely faster and more ‘exciting’.

 Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
 Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Once we boarded the boat, we were brought around the floating market. This time we also passed by the residential area of the residents that stay around the floating market. The sight was interesting: seeing wooden houses on slits on the river bank with dogs peeking out occasionally gave an insight to how life is like for the local who stay in such a watery environment. As we meandered through the waterways, we also passed by the (familiar) market area where the stalls selling souvenirs are located. If we liked a certain stall and wanted to check out the goods, all we had to do was... Read more >>

An impromptu visit to the Teddy Bear Museum (제주 테디베어뮤지엄) & dinner

Teddy Bear Museum (제주 테디베어뮤지엄)
Teddy Bear Museum (제주 테디베어뮤지엄) entrance

At the end of the Jejueco tour, it was free time and we decided to make stop at the Teddy Bear Museum (제주 테디베어뮤지엄). Victor was so kind to drop us off at the entrance of the Teddy Bear Museum and so we made our way in. It was about 5 in the evening and there wasn’t much... Read More >>

For our 3 days 2 nights stay on Jeju Island, we stayed at Jejueco Suites and joined their tour. Our stay was pleasant and the room was comfortable. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (천지연 폭포)

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (천지연 폭포)
The calm before the waterfall ^^

After the satisfying lunch at Soban 소반, it was off to visit one of the natural wonders of Jeju, Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (천지연 폭포), an area full of natural monuments (e.g. from the wild Dampalsu trees, camellias to the clear and deep waters of Cheonjiyeon etc...). The waterfall got its name from the legend of the 7 fairies serving the King of Heaven who came down to the pond on stairs of cloud and bathed in its clean waters... Read more>>

Wangz Hotel, Singapore [Guest Post]

If you are ever in Singapore and are looking for a hotel that is near Outram Park and the MRT, Wangz Hotel is a hotel that you can consider. Being close to the Outram MRT Station, it is also a breeze if/when you want to go to Habourfont (and Sentosa). From the hotel there is a shuttle bus that will bring you to the MRT station, so it is pretty convenient. If you prefer to walk, the hotel is about a 5-10 minutes walk to the Outram MRT Station.

Wangz Hotel, being a boutique hotel, may not be very big, but it has all the basic necessities and facilities. Service was commendable and personal: check in was swift and efficient. The room we were allotted was clean and well-maintained, with the usual amenities such as bottles of water and toiletries being replenished daily. Throughout our time in Singapore, the staff were very helpful and... Read more>>

Hotel Equatorial Melaka (Review)

Hotel Equatorial Melaka
The lobby
Was in Malacca recently and stayed in Hotel Equatorial Melaka for 5 days (for a church camp). Hotel Equatorial Melaka claims to have a 5 star rating and its décor is on the vintage side (it has been around for some time and its age does show). Fortunately some areas seem to have undergone some refurbishment, but unfortunately the hotel ends up with what seems like an identity crisis: while some areas retain its old vintage-ness (and tired chairs / sofas / carpets), other areas attempt to be modern (but both not complementing each other in any.. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 1: On Jetstar back to Singapore

When the 5 days was up, it was time to bid adieu to Taipei. A taxi ride from Hotel Quote Taipei saw us to the airport within an hour. The staff at Hotel Quote Taipei were very polite and helpful when they helped us book the taxi to the airport. As the flight was in the late afternoon, we left at one in the afternoon.

It was a smooth journey to the airport and checking in the luggage was a breeze. Well, it was smooth until DramaQueen realized that the water bottle in her bag was not closed properly and everything inside was literally swimming. But that was easy resolved with a quick trip to the airport’s bathroom and use of the (multi-purpose) hand dryer - the wonders of gadgets. Well, that semi-wet passport of hers did make an interesting conversation piece between her and th... Read more>>

Taipei 101

Taipei 101 was on our itinerary on Day 2 right after our visit to the Taipei Zoo. What is a visit to Taipei and not visit Taipei 101 (at least once)? It is like not seeing the Eiffel Tower when in Paris, but I digress. There is a free shuttle bus from the City Hall MRT Station, but we were too excited that we boarded a paying bus. It only cost NT$7 and took about 5 minutes to reach Taipei 101, so it... Read more>>

Hotel Double One (Beitou)

While in Taipei, Taiwan, what should not be missed is the hotsprings, especially in winter! So to reward ourselves, we decided to have a short stay (just one night) at one of the hotels in XinBeitou or Beitou. Initially I wanted to stay at Grand View Resort, but the price was just too steep with it being peak season and all (it was also quite a last minute planned trip).

We finally settled for Hotel Double One, a quaint little hotel located away from the hustle and bustle in Beitou. Service was excellent: there is complimentary pickup from the MRT Station, and they even offered to drive us back to the Beitou MRT Station on the day that we left. If you are in a rush, they would also offer to pack your breakfast for you to take on the go. How thoughtful! Breakfast itself was a delight with foods such as beef noodles and... Read more>>

Just Sleep (Ximending)

Just Sleep (Ximending) is conveniently located near the Green-Blue Metro line, Ximending MRT Station, and just 1 stop away from the Taipei Main Station. From the Ximending MRT Station, via Exit 6 (not exit M6 of the station in the direction of the "Ximen Intelligent Library", the hotel is about a 5-10 minute walk up a flight of stairs and right next to a 7-Eleven Store.

The hotel has 9 floors, but it shares the building with offices, and occupies the 1st and 5th to 9th floors. The room we stayed in was quite compact (but expected for a hotel of this caliber) for two persons (with a double bed).

Between Beitou, Xin Beitou and the Hot Springs Experience (Taiwan)

It might get confusing at times when Beitou and Xin Beitou are interchangeably used at times. For the benefit of those who are just as confused as I was and to the best of my understanding, Beitou is one of the areas in Taiwan known for its hot springs and contains both the old and the new.

Old Beitou, more commonly known as Beitou, is where the Beitou MRT Station, Beitou Museum and Beitou Market are located. Beitou contains hotels/spas which are slightly more up-scale than those located in Xin Beitou. According to Wikitravel, (old) Beitou is characterized by it high quality spas, good hotels/resorts (e.g. Grand View Resort Beitou/Villa 32), excellent living accommodation and... Read More>>

Sampan Rides (The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Singapore)

While there is the famous gondola in Venice at the Venetian Macau where you get to have a boat ride with a gondolier that sings as he rows you down the Grand Canal. Singapore has its own version, well something similar but minus the singing – the Sampan Ride at the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Singapore which is indoors and sheltered from bad weather. A sampan is a flat bottom small Chinese wooden boat and the name is derived from the original Cantonese (Chinese dialect) term for boats.

Pont des Arts (Paris) - a bridge with meaning

Pont des Arts

On the way back from dinner one day in Paris, we stumbled across the Pont des Arts or Passerelle des Arts. The Pont des Arts or Passerelle des Arts is a pedestrian bridge that spans across the Seine River, linking the Institut de France and the central square (cour carrée) of the palais du Louvre.

According to Wikipedia, this nine-arch metallic bridge was the fist metal bridge in Paris built for pedestrians. The bridge served as a place for art exhibitions and is today’s platform for painters, artists and photographers who are drawn t...Read more>>

Beitou and XinBeitou - Taipei (Taiwan)

According to Wikitravel, Beitou which is famous for its hot springs is located in the northern part of Taipei (Taiwan). Beitou consists of Beitou, where locals live and work and Xin (New) Beitou, which was developed as a hot spring destination during the Japanese era. The hot springs at Beitou consists of sulphur, so the smell of sulphur permeates throughout the air which might not agree with certain people’s noses much.

To get to Beitou, you would have to take the red line (Xindian-Danshui/Nanshijiao-Beitou). There is an information counter at the Beitou MRT Station which can advise you on the attractions and what you can do... Read more>>

Capella Singapore Sentosa Apr 2012 Overview

Capella Singapore
The Capella is a (5-star) hotel located on Sentosa and exudes discreet elegance and charm without being ostentatious. Catered towards both tourists and locals who want something near nature and away from the maddening crowds and bustle of the city. With 112 rooms spanning over a large property, you will not really experience the sometimes-noisy crowds at hotels. It is really a totally different experience and though you have to splurge a bit (or a lot depending on your budget), it is definitively worth the experience! Capella's architecture is a clever mix of traditional colonial building with an ultramodern semi-circle where the rooms are located.

Finding the right hotel just got a whole lot easier - HotelsCombined.comWith my birthday around the corner, I decided on another staycation after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. Now I didn’t get the most expensive room, just the Garden Premier room with on average costs S$700++. Good thing I managed to find an offer that was about 10% cheaper. You can read more about my staycation experience here.

I must say that the Tripadvisor reviews were pretty accurate: the place was nice and the service was a little more than your usual 5-star hotel, and yes they even managed to remember my name during my short stay there. Getting to the Capella was a little more challenging than the Mövenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa as it is located some distance away from the Imbiah station on the Sentosa Express. I should have just called to made transport arrangements, but lesson learnt. We ended up taking a taxi on Sentosa...Read more>>
